Video: Troy Aikman doesn’t believe there should even be a Tom Brady-Patrick Mahomes GOAT debate because Mahomes has a long way to go

There has been a lot of talk about Patrick Mahomes challenging Tom Brady for the title of the greatest quarterback, with Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs trying for their 3rd Super Bowl championship. Many people believe it is far too early to have that conversation including legendary Dallas Cowboys quarterback Troy Aikman.

During an appearance on The Dan Patrick Show, Aikman shared his thoughts on the comparison between Tom Brady and Patrick Mahomes. He emphasized that it’s still very early in Mahomes’ career. When asked about the key factor that would elevate the Chiefs quarterback to Brady’s level, Aikman pointed directly to championships.

“For me, it’s championships,” Troy Aikman said, “I mean, it sounds self-serving when I say that because I was able to win three. But at the end of the day, the reason that he’s getting paid $50 million a year is to win championships. It’s why all quarterbacks are. It’s why they’re drafted where they were drafted.

“So I don’t like the conversation to say, well, Patrick Mahomes is the greatest quarterback of all time. I mean, I just don’t know how you can say that at this stage of his career. He’s certainly on pace,” Aikman added.

When asked what it would take for Mahomes to be a serious challenger to Brady, Aikman responded.

“With Tom, I think you’ve got to win seven or you’ve got to win eight,” Aikman said, “I do think that’s the measuring stick. And it’s hard to imagine that. There was a time when I didn’t think anybody could beat Joe Montana or Terry Bradshaw and win five and then he’s gone on, won seven. So I guess that’s the bar.”
