You never know what Bill Belichick is going to do on draft day, but tonight he made his biggest stunner yet with the selection of guard Cole Strange out of Chattanooga, a player many experts had pegged for the middle rounds at best.
The selection obviously stunned Patriots fans, and media members. It also caught many NFL coaches, and executives off guard as well.
Rams head coach Sean McVay was caught on camera live with his general manager Les Snead, and apparently they couldn’t believe it.
“Strange just went!” McVay said, interrupting a press conference.
“U-T Chattanooga to the first round!” Snead yelled.
“How about that? And we wasted our time watching him thinking he’d be at 104,” McVay said.
Belichick has been known to reach for guys in the past, and to some success, but this feels like it is his biggest gamble yet, a gamble that he needs to pay off.
